Scabies are tiny, hairy mites with long tentacles that burrow beneath the skin, lay eggs, defecate and die. Their offspring hatch, and the life-cycle repeats itself until treatments finally kill off these disgusting pests. Their presence is usually confirmed by a pervasive itch and bright red rash. Scabies frequently arise and spread in nursing home facilities where the institution has an inadequate infection control program.

On December 16, 2015, the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration conducted an unannounced revisit survey at Englewood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, which is located at 1111 Drury Lane, Englewood, Florida 34224.  At that time, the survey team determined that the nursing home was not in substantial compliance with the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 based upon its failure to “effectively investigate, control, monitor, and prevent the transmission of a highly contagious skin condition caused by scabies” for residents in its nursing home.

An inspection and interviews were conducted with Englewood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center’s staff members.  One certified nurse assistant “showed a small amount of scabbed areas in-between the web spaces of her fingers.”  This staff member “stated that she was responsible for showering all residents on the north side of the facility.”  Englewood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center is operated by Consulate Healthcare – a large nursing home chain which is based in Maitland, Florida.
